Network Field Operations Engineer • Bloomington, Indiana (On-site)

Position Overview

mStreet Fiber is seeking a Network Field Operations Engineer to serve as the local “smart hands” for the Indiana market — the on-site technical resource that executes work directed by the centralized, remote NOC, Network Engineering, and Platform teams, none of whom maintain a physical presence in Indiana. Reporting to the Director of Network and Service Management, this individual contributor performs field troubleshooting, testing, and remediation under real-time remote direction, in addition to standing OSP maintenance, service activations, and break/fix restoration.

Working closely with the Network Team and remote NOC, Network Engineering, and Platform teams, this position is often the only physical presence on-site during an incident or change — providing the eyes, hands, and test equipment those remote teams need to diagnose and resolve issues without a dedicated truck roll of their own. As the Indiana market transitions from construction to steady-state operations, this role’s day-to-day focus shifts from construction support toward ongoing network maintenance, testing and validation, break/fix restoration, and support of the network’s Layer 1 evolution and expansion.

The SVP, Technology & Operations provides enterprise-wide functional oversight of this role, establishing consistent technical standards, career development paths, and performance management across all mStreet Fiber markets. Day-to-day work direction and local coordination continue to come from the Director, Network & Service Management.

Key Responsibilities

Remote Team Support (“Smart Hands”)

  • Serve as the on-site technical resource executing work directed in real time by the remote NOC during outages, escalations, and maintenance windows.
  • Execute physical tasks specified by Network Engineering and the Platform team — including equipment installs and replacements, reseating or replacing optics, port and cable verification, resets, and configuration changes performed under remote direction.
  • Provide live on-site diagnostic support (visual inspection, signal/power readings, physical connections and continuity checks) via phone or video so remote teams can diagnose and resolve issues without a dedicated truck roll of their own.
  • Follow MOPs, SOPs, and step-by-step change instructions issued by remote Engineering and Platform teams precisely, confirming completion and providing on-site verification before closing out work.

Network Field Operations

  • Perform field troubleshooting, maintenance, and restoration of the FTTH network.
  • Support customer service activations, disconnects, and complex service repairs.
  • Respond to emergency fiber cuts and network outages, supporting rapid break/fix restoration.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on network infrastructure and facilities.
  • Validate field work to ensure compliance with engineering standards.

Outside Plant (OSP) Support

  • Perform fiber troubleshooting, testing, and restoration.
  • Conduct OTDR testing, fiber certification, and network acceptance testing.
  • Inspect aerial and underground plant, cabinets, vaults, and network facilities.
  • Maintain accurate as-built documentation and field records.

Break/Fix & Technical Support

  • Support break/fix troubleshooting and restoration for the Indiana network, partnering with the NOC on outage response.
  • Support complex residential and commercial installations performed by the team.
  • Partner with the Customer Care and NOC to resolve escalated network issues and provide Tier II field support.
  • Assist with service provisioning, turn-ups, and equipment testing and replacements.
  • Participate in and oversee after-hours maintenance windows and emergency restoration efforts.

Contractor & Vendor Coordination

  • Verify contractor work meets company quality standards and assists with acceptance of newly constructed fiber facilities.
  • Escalate contractor performance or quality concerns to the Director, Network & Service Management.
  • Coordinate material and equipment requirements with warehouse personnel.

Network Performance & Documentation

  • Monitor field team performance and identify recurring network issues.
  • Support root cause analysis following outages.
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, maintenance, and restoration activities.
  • Assist in maintaining network documentation, GIS records, and asset inventories.
  • Recommend operational improvements that increase network reliability and customer satisfaction.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all OSHA, utility, and company safety requirements.
  • Maintain safe work practices while performing field activities.
  • Ensure proper use and care of company vehicles, tools, and testing equipment.
  • Support emergency response activities during severe weather or major service interruptions.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications, Network Engineering, or equivalent field experience.
  • 5–8 years of experience supporting fiber optic or telecommunications networks.
  • Experience with FTTH deployments, OSP maintenance, and service restoration.
  • Experience working with construction contractors and field operations.
  • Working knowledge of fiber design records, as-builts, OTDR results, power levels, splice documentation, drop construction, customer activation workflows, and field acceptance practices.

Technical Competencies

  • Fiber optic troubleshooting and restoration.
  • OTDR testing and fiber certification.
  • XGS-PON network operations.
  • OSP construction and maintenance.
  • Utility locating and damage prevention.
  • Service provisioning and activation.
  • Network documentation and GIS systems.

Professional Competencies

  • Comfortable executing detailed technical instructions in real time from a remote team (e.g., phone- or video-guided troubleshooting and change execution), with strong verbal communication to support that collaboration.
  • Self-starter with strong technical problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Organized and detail-oriented with a documentation-first mindset.
  • Able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Willingness to participate in after-hours maintenance and emergency restoration.

Compensation & Benefits

Competitive base salary plus performance-based annual bonus opportunity, commensurate with experience. Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision coverage, retirement plan, and paid time off. Final compensation will be determined based on the candidate’s experience and qualifications.
